Shot Blasting

Shot blasting is one of the most effective methods of cleaning steel and metal components, ensuring a high-quality surface preparation for further processing. Impostal performs abrasive blasting in accordance with applicable standards, guaranteeing full repeatability of results and precise adjustment of process parameters to the client’s expectations. This method is widely used in the construction, manufacturing, and refurbishment industries, where durability and perfect surface preparation for painting, galvanizing, or other anti-corrosion protection are essential.

What is shot blasting?

Shot blasting involves striking the surface with abrasive material (typically steel shot) propelled by compressed air or turbines. The intense kinetic energy effectively removes rust, old paint coatings, mill scale, dirt, and grease marks. The process is not only highly efficient but also fast, allowing Impostal to carry out large orders in a short time while maintaining high finishing quality.

Why is shot blasting so effective?

  • It provides a rough surface ideal for anti-corrosion coatings
  • It removes contaminants that are difficult to eliminate with other methods
  • It works significantly faster than manual metal cleaning
  • It complies with international surface quality standards
  • It ensures a uniform result across the entire treated structure

Shot blasting cleanliness grades – Sa standards

The shot blasting process is divided into four standard cleanliness grades, designated as Sa. Each defines the level of cleanliness that the metal must achieve after processing.

This level involves removing all foreign contaminants such as rust, grease, old paint, and deposits. After Sa 1 blasting, the surface is visually clean, although slight traces of the original coating may remain.

This grade ensures the removal of most visible contaminants – rust, paint coatings, and greasy deposits. Only minor residues that do not affect the durability of subsequent protection are acceptable.

The most commonly used grade in industry. It removes all contamination, allowing only minimal point-like traces in the form of dots or shadows. The surface is uniform and perfectly prepared for painting and anti-corrosion protection.

The highest cleanliness grade, used primarily for new steel components. The surface is free from any contamination, uniform in color, and perfectly smooth. It provides maximum adhesion for protective coatings and the highest standard of preparation for further processing.
